Today 8am (US pacific time), the LIGO interferometers commenced their first science observation run, in search for gravitational waves. The search and direct detection of gravitational waves is the next big physics discovery. Indirect detection and proof of their existence has been made, but no direct detection has occurred. The LIGO interferometers are designed to measure minuscule displacement, on to suspended test masses, due to these gravitational waves.

The LIGO detectors have undergone a major upgrade during the Advanced LIGO project, during which ACIGA members have contributed in key areas, supported by the Australian Research Council
